Treating Psoriasis The Natural Way

Psoriasis originates from an abnormality in the immune system which causes inflammation in the skin and is not contagious. It’s a chronic skin disease which results in dry red patches covered in scales which most commonly appears behind the ears, scalp, elbows and knees. Psoriasis may look unsightly and for those affected it can lower confidence and self esteem. Although some people have a family history of psoriasis, flare ups can also be caused by a number of factors including stress, anxiety, infections and even medications.

Medications to treat psoriasis aren’t always effective and can only offer a quick relief. Some topical steroids are used as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and redness. However these have various side effects including thinning of the skin, stretch marks and can even affect internal organs when applied to widespread areas of the skin. When topical steroids are stopped psoriasis can come back with avengence.

As it’s seen as an internal disease set off by the immune system diet and natural remedies can be the long term answer to psoriasis free skin. One of the most effective ways in which to treat this has been to consume plenty of green vegetables as they have many anti-inflammatory properties. Here a range of natural products and spices which can either be applied directly to the skin or used within cooking to eradicate psoriasis.

Turmeric – As a natural alternative to steroid cream it is a natural way to relieve irritation and can be taken in gel capsules or applied directly to the skin. Apply it directly to the affected area by mixing the powder with water to create a paste. Preferably do this before you go to bed and cover with a bandage then remove in the morning and wash off.

Comfrey Root – Apply directly to the skin to help improve normal cell replication.Crush the leaves to release the juices and place the leaves over the affected area.

Dead Sea Salts – Applying these to the skin acts like an exfoliator and stops itching and the skin scales of psoriasis. The high levels of calcium, magnesium and potassium are all good for the treatment of this condition.

Warm Olive Oil – Apply directly to the scalp and gently massage into it to soften dead skin so it flakes away.

Burdock and Milk Thistle – This helps to detoxify the liver which is important in the treatment of psoriasis. As this corrects abnormal liver function it detoxifies the liver and filters the blood so it can’t manifest itself on the skin.

There are other treatments for psoriasis including hospital based PUVA phototherapy treatment. By using UVB light it can slow down excessive skin cell growth and clear symptoms. PUVA has helped around 85% of patients to clear psoriasis. Yet patients who use this form of treatment are at greater risk of skin cancer.
The most holistic way of treating psoriasis is naturally through changes in diet. Medicated treatments and topical steroids should be approached with caution and only used if all else fails!
