Hangovers are as old as alcohol itself, which scientists believe may have been tens of thousands of years. A hangover described as any number or combination of unpleasant sensations that follow a bout of heavy drinking. These can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound, anxiety, depression, difficulty thinking and overwhelming fatigue. The most commonly accepted idea of what causes a hangover is usually a combination of dehydration, low blood sugar and acetaldehyde toxicity. Some other schools of thought believe it to simply be acute withdrawal. However, many people who try to fight a hangover with another drink usually just make themselves feel worse. No matter the cause of a hangover, every culture in the world has their own traditional concoction that is said to relieve symptoms. Here are some different hangover cures from around the world.
In Italy, several cups of espresso are the order of the day if you want to shake off the effects of a night of drinking. Espresso, which is essentially concentrated coffee, is loaded with more than enough caffeine to perk you right up. Whereas a hangover can make you want to just crawl back into bed and stay there for the foreseeable future, a few shots of espresso are great for clearing your mind and cutting through the physical sluggishness. It’s also good for warding off that pounding headache!
The Chinese are fond of lemon water as a hangover cure. This concoction is simple, requires almost no energy and tastes great. Just squeeze a lemon into a glass of water or add as much bottled lemon juice as you’d like. Lemons are rich in antioxidants, most notably vitamin C. The antioxidant levels in lemons and other citrus fruits are highly effective at banishing the toxic side effects of the alcohol and returning you to a somewhat normal state.
Salted Pickled Plums
The Japanese favor umeboshi, or salted pickled plums, as a cure for the morning after. This food makes sense on several levels. When you drink, you deplete your sodium levels. The salt used to make umeboshi can easily remedy this deficiency. Drinking also flushes out various electrolytes including calcium, magnesium and potassium. Plums, from which umeboshi are made, provide an ample supply of these critical nutrients and will make you feel much better.
If you get drunk in Poland, you’d probably be offered a glass of sauerkraut juice. Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage, and it provides several benefits that help banish a hangover. Alcohol has an acidifying effect on the body an can result in a condition called acidosis. Some experts actually believe that it is this condition that causes the majority of hangover symptoms. Cabbage, especially once it’s been turned into sauerkraut, is great for restoring your body to an alkaline state. Sauerkraut juice also contains considerable amounts of salt, B vitamins and electrolytes, all of which are flushed from your body when you drink.
All in all, most of the world’s hangover cures work by replacing nutrients that are lost in abundance during drinking. Some others help due to their stimulating effects on the body and brain. You can rest assured that as long there is alcohol; there will be nearly limitless hangover cures at your disposal.
