What is Kratom?

Mitragyna Speciosa, more commonly known by its non-scientific name of Kratom, is a relatively big type of tree that belongs to the Rubiacae family, which is also known as the coffee family. Kratom is a plant that is native to the surrounding of Southeast Asia, especially in the country of Thailand. As a matter of fact, the word Kratom is a Thai word. However, the plant that is traditionally used as a herb is also common in places like Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Kratom tree is generally from 4 to 9 meters tall and 4.5 meters wide. However, if conditions of the environment where it’s growing are favourable, the tree can grow from anywhere to 10 to 30 meters tall. Covered in dark green leaves that constantly shed themselves, the kratom leaves also sports yellow flowers that grow together in groups.

There are also various types of kratom being sold all over the world, however, most are invented and are a product of the vendors and dealers that sell them. The vendors and dealers do this in order to distinguish and discern their kratom from those of others. A lot of the times, the different types being sold include other plants being blended and mixed in with the original kratom.

History of Kratom

Kratom like previously mentioned is indigenous to the area of Southeast Asia, and for most of its discovered life has been restricted to that area. It’s used locally, most often in rural parts of countries in Southeast Asia, and is regarded highly as a medicine. Along with being a medicinal drug, though, Kratom is a drug, which when taken can affect the mind.

Discovered during the early 19th century, Kratom was often used as an opium substitute for those who couldn’t afford opium or when it wasn’t available. Apart from that, Kratom was often used, by villagers and locals of rural areas, as an ointment for wounds and for curing fever and diarrhea.
